Riverwoods was incorporated in 1959 and has developed into a peaceful community, secluded from the industry and commercialism of surrounding suburbs. Country homes built on large wooded lots still prevail, with village zoning to protect the densely wooded areas. It has retained its rustic, wooded environment as a result of carefully planned zoning laws prohibiting excess development
Transportation
Commuters can catch the Metra trains in nearby Deerfield for a 39-minute trip into the city. The Tri-State Tollway can be accessed just outside of the village.
Schools
Both Districts 106 and 109 serve local elementary school students. High school students attend Deerfield High School, District 113, one of the top 10 academic schools in the state and Stevenson High School District 125. Additional education opportunities are available at Holy Cross Catholic School, Loyola Academy, Trinity College and Trinity Divinity School.
Shopping
Riverwoods residents are attracted to Bannockburn Green, a 35-store mall in a rustic, country setting. Northbrook Court, Hawthorne Mall, Deerbrook Mall and Deerfield Commons are also nearby.
Recreation
Residents of Riverwoods have use of the Deerfield Park District facilities for a small fee. Various private club can be found throughout the area.
