Housing: Prevailing architectural styles include ranches, split-levels and bungalows.

Transportation: The Kennedy Expressway (I-90) eastbound, the Northwest Tollway (I-90) westbound, and the Tri-State Tollway (I-294), all have interchanges in Des Plaines. Local commuter trains stop in downtown Des Plaines and offer a half-hour ride to the city.

Schools: The majority of students are served by District 62 elementary and junior high schools, where computer science and instrumental music are among the core curriculum. Main Township high schools serve Des Plaines as well as surrounding communities. Oakton Community College is a local public institution in Des Plaines offering a selection of degrees to over 10,500 students. The O’Hare branch of DePaul University is also located in Des Plaines.

Shopping: Des Plaines has several shopping opportunities within the community.
Woodfield Mall in nearby Schaumburg has over 250 department and specialty stores.

Recreation: The city has 20 community clubs catering to a mixture of interests and talents. In addition, The Park District features an 18-hole par-3 golf course on 73-acre Lake Park. There are nearly 80 community organizations currently in operation.
