Elk Grove Village was named for ten 800-pound elk that were brought to the town from Wyoming in 1924. Some of their descendants still live in local forest preserves today. Booming commercial and industrial development is well balanced by equally extensive residential progress. Both administer funds to lower taxes and subsidize the award-winning park district facilities that serve area residents year-round.

Housing
The east side of the village is compromised primarily of older homes, whereas, the west side tends to be newer construction with new subdivisions and custom built homes.

Transportation
Although Elk Grove Village does not offer local commuter train service, nearby access to six commuter train stops is available. Bus service operates throughout the area as well as to the Arlington Heights train station. Three major interstates have convenient connections in Elk Grove Village.

Schools
Grade school students attend Districts 54 and 59. Elk Grove High School, District 214, offers both computer learning and language laboratories to enhance the curriculum. A Catholic grade school is also in town.

Shopping
Elk Grove Park and Shop contains 13 stores. Various larger malls surround the community that afford residents a complete shopping experience.

Recreation
The village offers several theme parks including Pirates Cove Park featuring a 90-foot pirate ship and Wild West Town. The park District also sponsors a variety of recreational activities in various facilities around the village.

Hospitals
Evanston Hospital is a 550-bed teaching hospital with a medical staff of 700. The facility operates a prenatal center, a rehabilitation unit, a kidney dialysis unit, and ocular center. All physicians are faculty members at Northwestern University Medical School. St. Francis Hospital also serves the community.
