First settled in 1845 as the Lake Michigan shipping center of Port Clinton, Highland Park has upheld a proud tradition of gracious lakefront living for over 100 years. Twice designated an “All American City” by the National Municipal League, Highland Park enjoys the nation’s fourth highest per-capita income and is home to some of the North Shore’s most exclusive properties. Situated on tall bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan, the community setting is enhanced by mature trees, picturesque ravines, and, to the west, the gentle sloping hills of the Skokie Valley. The Ravinia area takes its name from these ravines and is home to Ravinia Park, which is famed for its annual summer music festivals dating back to the late 1800’s.

Transportation
Metra express commuter train service reaches the Chicago Loop in just over one half-hour. Drivers use the Edens Expressway just minutes away from the village. Nortran provides regular community bus service.

Schools
Highland Park’s nationally acclaimed schools offer a comprehensive, innovative curriculum, with over 90% of graduates going on to college. Eight grade schools, three middle schools, and Highland Park High School serve the area. Immaculate Conception, North Suburban Synagogue Beth El, B’nai Torah, Temple Solel, and Lakeside Congregation offer preschool, after school, and / or weekend classes. St. James offers an alternative to public education. The College of Lake County, Lake Forrest College, and Barat College are all located nearby.

Recreation
Public beaches, a boat launching ramp, a fully-equipped community center, and indoor ice rink, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, two public swimming pools, a 97-acre nature center, two 18-hole golf courses, and some 340 acres of park land are among facilities maintained by Highland Park’s award-winning Park District. A number of prestigious private country clubs are also located within the community.

Shopping
The Ravinia business district, Port Clinton Square, and the Crossroads Shopping Center highlight the exclusive stores and shops in Highland Park. Northbrook Court is a major regional mall on the community’s southwestern edge. Old Orchard is just minutes away via the Edens Expressway.

Hospitals
Highland Park Hospital is a 312-bed facility with a medical staff of 400. This level II trauma center serves as a medical and orthopedic center with a wide variety of specialists to serve the community.

Places of Worship
Nine denominations are represented within the community, including several synagogues.
