Skokie was officially named in 1940 as the gateway to the Skokie Valley. In 1950, the construction of the Old Orchard shopping mall led to increased activity within the community. By 1960, the population had risen by over 300 percent. Local industry and small businesses fund village services and keep property taxes low. Skokie is home to Center East for the Performing Arts and Northlight Theater. All this is just thirteen miles from the city.
Transportation
The Chicago & Northwestern and the Milwaukee Road trains stop in the neighboring communities of Evanston and Morton Grove. Commuter trains reach the city in about 30 minutes. The Skokie Swift CTA train line reaches downtown Chicago in 32 minutes. The Edens Expressway (I-94) is accessible at the west end of the village. The Kennedy Expressway, via the Edens, has an interchange just minutes from town. Limousine service is available to O’Hare Airport.
Schools
Six elementary school Districts (65, 68, 69, 72, 73, and 73.5) serve the Skokie area and all provide comprehensive programs. Students attend either Niles North or Niles West High Schools in District 219 or Evanston Township High School in District 202. The community also houses one Jewish, one Lutheran, and three Catholic elementary schools as an alternative to public schooling.
Shopping
There are more than 2,000 retail shops within the village. Over 100 of these shops are located in Old Orchard, one of the largest malls in the Chicagoland area offering extensive shopping as well as professional buildings. Major department stores include Marshall Field’s, Nordstrom, Lord & Taylor, and Bloomingdales.
Recreation
The Skokie Park District manages over 190 acres of land, with 53 newly renovated parks and playgrounds. Facilities include two swimming pools, three neighborhood recreation centers, a par-three golf course, and an indoor skating rink. All are available to the public. Two private country clubs and the Skokie Fine Arts Commission are also located in town.
Hospitals
Rush-North Shore Medical Center is a 226-bed facility located in town. Affiliated with Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago, the facility includes a level II trauma center specializing in orthopedics, endoscopy, and laser eye procedures.
Places of Worship
Skokie houses 27 worship facilities representing a variety of denominations.
