Winnetka, Native American for “beautiful land”, is known for its architecturally diverse homes. This community is among Chicagoland’s finest and most desirable places to live. Bordered on the east by Lake Michigan and the west by the beautiful Skokie Lagoons, industry is non-existent and commercialism is limited in this upscale residential community.

Transportation
The Chicago & Northwestern trains make regularly scheduled stops in town and reach the Chicago Loop in 29 minutes. The Edens Expressway (I-94) has an interchange just west of the community. Local bus service is available.

Schools
Local children attend elementary schools in District 36 and 37. Both provide gifted programs and computer education. High school students attend New Trier High School, District 203, where 98% of students continue their education after graduation. Parochial schools are available as an alternative to public education. The private North Shore Country Day School, the Hadley School for the Blind, and the Music Center of the North Shore are also in the village. Oakton Community College serves Winnetka residents.

Shopping
Small retail shops are found in three separate local shopping areas. Wilmette’s Edens Plaza Shopping Center is located nearby and has many fine stores. Old Orchard Center in Skokie features a variety of department stores including Lord & Taylor, Marshall Fields, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales and Nordstroms.

Recreation
The Winnetka Park District maintains 34 separate park areas occupying 235 acres, including two golf courses and a senior citizens center. An extensive recreational program offers a wide range of sports and arts and crafts. Ten country clubs can be found in the surrounding area. The Winnetka Community House provides a meeting spot for various social organizations and community activities.

Hospitals
Evanston Hospital is a level I trauma center with a medical staff of over 700. Highland Park Hospital, to the north, is a level II trauma center with a staff of over 400. Evanston Hospital is a teaching facility incorporated with Northwestern University Medical School. Highland Park serves as a training and resource center for paramedics.

Places of Worship
Winnetka houses twelve places of worship representing eight denominations.
